About the Program

The Transportation-Public Health Leadership Program is part of a larger initiative led by the University of North Carolina’s Injury Prevention Research Center and Highway Safety Research Center, designed to bring public health strategies into transportation safety. Under a cooperative agreement with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Adopting a Public Health Approach to Traffic Safety equips agencies with the resources and tools to reduce traffic injuries and fatalities, address disparities, and foster safer communities across the U.S.

Currently in a pilot phase with six project sites, the Transportation-Public Health Leadership Program provides professionals with specialized training, resources, and hands-on guidance to embed public health principles into their work. Through interactive learning modules and collaborative coaching sessions, participants develop the skills to implement effective, interdisciplinary strategies that align with Federal safety goals and support ongoing efforts in strategic and local plans. In addition to building foundational knowledge, the program aims to inspire new ideas, facilitate implementation activities, and cultivate a community of practice for sustained efforts.
